Frequently Asked Question

What Are Credits and How Do They Work?
Last Updated 3 months ago

StackScan uses a credit-based system to provide access to our technographic data and search tools. This ensures that you only consume resources based on your specific project needs and subscription level.

Your subscription plan determines how many credits you receive, and these credits are refreshed on a recurring basis depending on your billing cycle.

Credits are consumed only when exporting data:

  • Search activity: Searching and filtering data does not consume any credits.
  • Dataset downloads: Each time you download a dataset, 1 credit is used.
  • For Tech Lookup, once you unlock a specific technology by using a credit, you can download its refined report multiple times within the same month without consuming additional credits for that same dataset.

Monthly Plans

When Credits Reset

Credits reset when your subscription renews each month.

How It Works

When you subscribe to a monthly plan, you receive your full credit allocation immediately. You can explore, search, and refine data freely without using credits. Credits are only deducted when you download datasets. On your next billing date, if payment is successful, your credits are restored to the full monthly amount. If payment fails, available credits are reset to zero until the subscription renews.

Example

If you subscribe on January 10, you receive your credits instantly. You can run unlimited searches during the month. If you download 5 datasets, 5 credits are used. On February 10, after successful payment, your credits reset to the full amount again.

Yearly Plans

When Credits Reset

Credits reset every month, even though billing occurs annually.

How It Works

After purchasing a yearly plan, you receive your monthly allowed credits immediately. You can perform unlimited searches without consuming credits. Credits are only used when downloading datasets. Each month, on the same date as your original subscription, your credits are refreshed to the full monthly allocation. This continues throughout your yearly subscription.

Example

If you subscribe on January 10, your credits are provided immediately. If you download datasets during the month, credits are deducted accordingly. On February 10, and every month thereafter, your credits reset to the full amount.

Plan Changes

What Happens When You Upgrade or Downgrade

If you change your subscription plan at any time, your credits are reset immediately to match the limits of the new plan.

  • Upgrade scenario: Moving to a higher-tier plan instantly increases your available credits to the new plan’s limit.
  • Downgrade scenario: Moving to a lower-tier plan resets your credits to the reduced limit of that plan.

Credit Visibility & Tracking

You can track credit usage directly within the platform:

  • In My Search (Keyword Scan) and My Report (Tech Lookup) sections, the “Credit Used” column clearly indicates whether a credit was consumed for each dataset.
  • This includes both cases—when a credit was used (e.g., first-time dataset download) and when a credit was not used (e.g., repeated downloads of an already unlocked Tech Lookup report within the same month).

Additionally, the system maintains a complete log of credit allocation, usage, and resets to ensure transparency and accurate tracking.

Credit Rollover Policy

Credits do not roll over to the next billing cycle.

Any unused credits at the end of your billing period are cleared when your subscription renews (monthly plans) or when the monthly cycle refreshes (yearly plans). Each cycle begins with a fresh allocation based on your plan, ensuring consistent and predictable usage without accumulation from previous periods.

Key Takeaways

  • Credits are only consumed when downloading datasets—not during searches.
  • Monthly plans refresh credits upon successful billing renewal.
  • Yearly plans refresh credits every month on the subscription date.
  • Plan changes trigger an immediate credit reset based on the new plan.
  • Previously unlocked Tech Lookup datasets can be downloaded multiple times within a month without additional credits.
  • Credit usage status is clearly visible in My Search and My Report sections.
  • Credits do not roll over; unused credits are cleared at the end of each billing cycle.

This model enables unrestricted exploration while ensuring credits are only used for actionable data exports.
